The charging interface is unified. iPhone will switch to USB-C?

Date: 2021/23/08

The iPhone has always used the unique lightning interface, which is very accustomed to users. In the past, we have seen a lot of news that the iPhone may change the charging port to USB-C. However, from the current news, Apple's goal is to cancel the charging interface design and achieve full wireless. Of course, judging from Apple's current wireless charging efficiency, it will take several years to achieve this goal. A unified charging interface regulation in the European Union may force the iPhone to switch to the USB-C interface in advance.

According to Reuters, the European Commission is expected to introduce a new legislation on a unified interface next month, and Apple may be forced to change the charging interface of its products from the current lightning to USB-C. According to the report, the legislation will unify the charging interface for all mobile phones and other related devices in all EU countries. Undoubtedly, this move has the greatest impact on the iPhone. At present, Android devices all use the USB-C interface design, and only the iPhone still uses the lightning interface.

In 2018, the European Commission tried to reach a final solution to the problem of a unified charging interface, but did not legislate, and Apple naturally opposed it. At that time, Apple stated that forcing the use of universal charging interfaces would stifle innovation and create electronic waste, and consumers would need to replace chargers and charging cables. The European Commission conducted a survey on the charging interface of mobile phones in 2019 and found that about 50% of the devices use the micro USB interface, 29% of the devices use the USB-C interface, and 21% of the devices use the lightning interface.

The European Commission has been promoting a universal charging interface for the past ten years. Last year, the European Parliament voted overwhelmingly in favor of the universal charging interface, believing that the chaotic charging interface generates more than 51,000 tons of electronic waste every year and brings inconvenience to consumers.

If the new bill is finally passed and USB-C is adopted as a unified standard, Apple will need to make changes, but they will not take effect immediately. Mobile phone manufacturers usually plan their new products several years in advance, so Apple can still apply for a buffer period. From a long-term perspective, the iPhone may face two choices, USB-C or a fully wireless design without a charging port. Maybe the latter is the future of the iPhone.
